142.36 € ÷ 0.194 € ≈ 734 period gyros/month

After contributions, before income tax. Annual income divided by 12, using 14 payments throughout the series. Wage and contributions are twelve-month means. Purchasing power in period gyros.

The quotient is rounded to a whole number.

Only the price varies within its published bounds. Wage and composition stay fixed. This is neither a total uncertainty range nor a statistical confidence interval. Bounds come from the model's selected percentage band.

Historical meat weights and changes in composition are model assumptions, not a series of market measurements. The assumed peak and decline in portion size need verification. The present-day weight defines the reference product. The era price refers to the wrap sold at the time; the classic price and weight-adjusted index depend on these assumptions.

Both prices are expressed in money of the same year. Classic rescaling adjusts composition, not inflation.

What does the comparison assume?

Historical meat weights and changes in composition are model assumptions, not a series of market measurements. The assumed peak and decline in portion size need verification. The present-day weight defines the reference product. The era price refers to the wrap sold at the time; the classic price and weight-adjusted index depend on these assumptions.

Which findings hold up?

We combine 2 wage bases, 4 historical-price choices and 7 composition specifications across 50 completed years, 1976–2025.

Counts are not probabilities. Payroll reconstruction remains under review. Portion scenarios are not measurements; geography and sale channel stay fixed.

Period gyros

8 distinct combinations. Portion assumptions do not affect this measure.

1988 rank: 7–7 out of 50 years.

Rank one is the highest purchasing power. Published baseline: rank 7.

Minimum–maximum across cases: ≈733–734 per month.

Extremes of the selected specifications, not an uncertainty interval. Ranks precede rounding of displayed counts.

1988 remains above 1976 in every selected case.

Where this figure comes from

Geometric interpolation. Interpolation between the inputs for 1984 and 1989, using the CPI path identified by the calculation rule.

The era price is an input or calculation in the series. Comparison in classic gyros adds assumptions about weight and composition.

Detailed evidence and calculation

What is supported for this year

We examine price, date, place and product composition separately. Evidence for the price does not establish historical meat weights.

The detailed year review is pending. This does not mean no sources exist.

Price
Sources and the calculation are shown below. A separate review of these dimensions has not yet been completed for this year.
Date
A separate check of publication date and observation date has not yet been completed here.
Geography
A separate review of geographical coverage and adjustments has not yet been completed here.
Composition
Historical meat weights and changes in composition are model assumptions, not a series of market measurements. The assumed peak and decline in portion size need verification. The present-day weight defines the reference product. The era price refers to the wrap sold at the time; the classic price and weight-adjusted index depend on these assumptions.

From source to series price

A source entry is not always the final price. These are the inputs retained by the model, without implying fresh verification of the original.

  1. 1. Amount before rescaling

    Not separately recorded

The recorded original amount before any rescaling. It may be a regulated ceiling or composite input, not an individual purchase.

  2. 2. Model input

    No anchor for this year

The price is calculated from other years and series rules. It is not presented as a new observation.

  3. 3. Period price in the series

    0.194 €

The final price used for period purchasing power. Classic composition rescaling is a separate subsequent step.

In some years an anchor constrains the range rather than replacing the calculated price. Historical amounts use the fixed drachma-to-euro conversion, without inflation adjustment.

Gyro and pita pricing rule, without an absolute price

Page 3, Price Control Order 5, 23 November 1988, EM. 3013, Article 1 §10 and Articles 3–4. The front page verifies issue 23797, 1 December 1988.

Effective from:

Cooked gyro weight specified by the order, not a market weighing
37–40 g
Separate raw-pork requirement for a skewer
37–40 g
Markup on the purchase cost of pita/bun added to the base price
50 %

Original order for Messinia. It uses different weight bases for cooked gyro and raw-pork skewers. Price depends on meat and bread procurement costs. Pita with condiments adds its purchase cost plus the stated markup; that percentage does not apply to the whole wrap. No absolute price, procurement invoice, national sample or observed portion weight is provided. Neither the Index price nor its portion-size assumption changes.

Order 23/1981 was recovered but gives kilogram/portion bases. Order 11/1985 was checked and concerns other dishes. Order 12/1984 and menus with a final pita price remain targets.
