Nominal price and wage changes, without inflation adjustment. Percentage changes use unrounded ratios; displayed counts are rounded. Historical euros use the fixed drachma conversion, not today's purchasing power.

Then and now: 1986 → 2026Period gyros: price 0.149 € → 4.30 € (+2,785.9%), purchasing power approximately 748 → 214 per month (-71.4%). Calculated classic price: 0.242 € → 4.30 €. From 1986 to 2026, the classic pita gyro reference price in the Gyronomics series changed by +1,676.9% and the minimum wage after contributions, before income tax, by +724.7%. Purchasing power in classic pita gyros changed by -53.6%: from approximately 461 to 214 per month. Wage basis: annual income divided by 12. Price and wage changes are nominal, not inflation-adjusted. Percentages use the index before rounding. Price evidence: 1986 (D: Interpolated inside the price-control era, or projected outside the documented range), 2026 (B: Regulated, single-source or an estimate with a range). This comparison does not measure the overall cost of living or establish causation. Historical meat weights and changes in composition are model assumptions, not a series of market measurements. The assumed peak and decline in portion size need verification. The present-day weight defines the reference product. The era price refers to the wrap sold at the time; the classic price and weight-adjusted index depend on these assumptions. https://gyronomics.gr/en/year/1986#year-sources https://gyronomics.gr/en/year/2026#year-sources Gyronomics · 2026.10.10-monthly-bulletin · 2026-10-10 · https://gyronomics.gr/en/press · CC BY 4.0 Immutable baseline dataset: https://gyronomics.gr/datasets/111be5b6d29bb2823d1c85a12489f0b4382c869e4d01e3c33fd1b0c69dbd3d14/bundle.json https://gyronomics.gr/en/press?from=1986&to=2026#compareGYRONOMICS / NUMBERS & STORIESThen and now: 1986 → 2026Period and classic gyros · same wage basisPeriod price0.149 € → 4.30 €+2,785.9%Per period wrap, nominalPeriod purchasing power748 → 214-71.4%Period gyros / month, approximatelyClassic price0.242 € → 4.30 €+1,676.9%Per classic pita gyro, nominalMinimum wage111.52 € → 919.72 €+724.7%Annual income ÷ 12, nominalClassic purchasing power461 → 214-53.6%Classic pita gyros / month, approximatelyPrice evidence: 1986 (D) · 2026 (B)Classic prices depend on modelled composition, not a second shop-price observation.Price / wage: nominal changes. The stories behind the figures

Did wages keep pace with the price?

For your selected comparison (1986 → 2026), purchasing power fell: -53.6%. The result comes from dividing the wage by the reference price. It does not isolate the effects of policy, taxes or business costs.

Change the comparison →

Why a classic pita gyro?

The wrap has changed: portion size and ingredients differ across decades. Comparing only the menu price would mix price changes with changes in the product. The classic unit adjusts for composition using a model. Its assumptions belong alongside any long-run comparison.

How the adjustment works →

One line, different kinds of evidence

A point on a chart may come from a documented price, a regulated price, an estimate or interpolation. Those are not equally strong observations. The evidence grades describe the price input; they do not certify every assumption in the purchasing-power model. Follow each year's sources before treating a movement as a historical finding.

Minimum wage in classic pita gyrosIn the Gyronomics series for 2026, the minimum wage after contributions and before income tax buys approximately 214 classic pita gyros per month. The calculation uses annual income divided by 12 (14 payments, 919.72 € per month) and a reference price of 4.30 € per classic pita gyro. This measures purchasing power for one product, not the overall cost of living. What the figure does not tell us

  • It is not a household budget: rent, energy and other expenses are not included.
  • The price series combines documented observations, estimates and interpolation. It is not a representative census of every Greek shop.
  • The classic pita gyro is a modelled unit for comparing changing portions over time. It is not necessarily the wrap sold by a particular shop.
  • A change in the index does not establish its cause. Changes in a sample's median do not by themselves measure inflation at the same shops.
