Minimum Wage

Before counting gyros, we count earnings. Explore the wage used by the Index and the reconstruction from historical payroll worksheets.

Both amounts are annual equivalents divided by the months of the year, before personal income tax. This difference concerns payment timing, contribution rates and other deductions. The reconstruction has not replaced the Index.

What would change in gyros?

Only the wage basis changes. The year's prices and portion assumptions stay fixed, before tax and without subsidy. The reconstruction remains under review.

Gyro difference = monthly-equivalent difference ÷ unchanged price. Calculations use full values; only the display is rounded.

Where does the wage difference come from?

Starting with the published series, we replace assumptions with the worksheet's assumptions in sequence. Each amount is the change in the monthly equivalent at that step.

Wages change first at the published payment and deduction factors; bonuses, contributions and other deductions follow. The order affects the allocation, not the total. These are not uncertainty shares or approval of the reconstruction. Rounded displays may differ slightly from the exact sum.

Worksheet with the original amounts
Does the peak year change?

Compares the available non-projected years under two wage bases. This is not a test of every model or a probability of correctness.

  • Period gyros: published 1983 reconstruction 1982.
  • Classic equivalents: published 1983 reconstruction 1982.

Excluded projections: 2026.

What if the price assumptions change too?

Two wage bases crossed with selected price tests. Not probabilities, confidence intervals or payroll approval. Portion assumptions stay fixed. The 1983 price endpoints are stresses, not observed annual means, and propagate into dependent 1981–1982 interpolation. Projected 2026 is excluded.

These cases cover all non-projected years, not only the selected year. A year's number of wins is not a probability.

What is established and what remains?

The published wage basis is retained. The comparison shows the reconstruction's arithmetic effect; the common insurance profile and application rules remain under review.

Conditionally documented
Ordinary-salary ceiling: first insured before 1993 · first insured from 1993.
Bonus ceiling: first insured from 1993.
The two insurance cases do not establish one common worker profile.
Quantified assumptions
Leave month, Easter reference and transitional-month weighting are assessed separately. Their ranges do not cover unknown insurance rules.
See the measured differences
Unquantified effect
Common first insurance, supplementary-fund affiliation and unresolved application rules. Their effect is not assumed zero or assigned an invented range.
Two provisions explaining the remaining questions

Law 4476/1965

Government Gazette, A 103 · 31/05/1965

Articles 4–5 · PDF 2, printed page 688

What it supports: Christmas, Easter and leave allowance attract contributions separately. The workday is the time basis, subject to more specific regulations.

What remains open: It does not by itself supply every bonus-day multiplier or prove unchanged application across all years.

Law 825/1978

Government Gazette, A 189 · 13/11/1978

Article 1(1), (3)–(4) · PDF 2, printed page 1779

What it supports: Replaces class-placement wording with contributions based on daily pay and links the cap to the highest class. Allows specific imputed-pay categories.

What remains open: The preceding period needs the applicable insurance basis and class tables. Finding a ceiling alone does not certify all contributions for 1976–1978.

From gross earnings to a monthly equivalent

We subtract contributions and other deductions from total annual gross earnings. We do not simply multiply the December wage. Missing values remain missing.

The subsidy is a separate scenario

Conditional contribution subsidy: 549.71 € annually · 45.81 € as a monthly equivalent.

It is excluded from the comparison above. Eligibility, calculation basis and receipt timing need verification. A receipt may relate to a previous year, as recorded in the detailed worksheet.

How much do assumptions matter?

We change one choice at a time within the same reconstruction, before tax and without subsidy. These are sensitivity checks, not a new series or a probability interval.

May–September is the selected test window, not a rule determining leave entitlement. Ranges must not be added. Ceilings are assessed separately in the next section; small calendar differences do not establish full legal approval.

Can the contribution ceiling change the result?

Above the ceiling, part of earnings stops attracting contributions. We compare recorded gross earnings with documented limits. Ordinary salary and bonuses are checked separately.

Fixed monthly pay, full-time throughout the year, no seniority increment, heavy work, special fund, variable pay or concurrent job. First insurance is tested separately: before 1993 or from 1993. Age does not determine this status.

Highest ordinary salary in the worksheet: 586.08 €

Ordinary salary: Does not cap earnings

Bonuses and leave allowance: Does not cap earnings

Lowest documented full-month ceiling within the year: 5,543.55 €. Difference from the highest salary: 4,957.47 €.

Periods and evidence

This checks ceilings under the stated profile and existing gross amounts. It does not approve all contribution rates, supplementary-fund affiliation, legally payable days or the complete payroll. Old-insured bonuses and post-2016 bonus ceiling rules remain separate gaps.

Year coverage, rules and sources

A documented non-binding ordinary-salary ceiling is established for at least one insurance case in 44 of 51 years. This is not a count of fully approved payroll years.

Without that evidence in this assessment: 1976, 1977, 1978, 1982, 1990, 1991, 1992.

We compare the highest salary with the lowest ceiling covering the complete year. Daily ceilings use 25 days for a full ordinary month. This multiplier is not transferred to bonuses. Missing evidence stays unknown, never zero contributions.

A conservative lower bound is identified as an inference from sources, not an observed ceiling. If even this bound exceeds salary, it suffices to rule out capping. If lower, the result remains unresolved. Individual period checks do not fill intervals without evidence.
